Essex Market concluded Lower East Side History Month in May 2025 with an event exploring a pivotal chapter in the market's survival during the challenging 1970s and 1980s. Through newly digitized archival footage, historical documents, and firsthand accounts, attendees examined how community activism and dedication helped preserve this vital neighborhood landmark during a period when NYC's fiscal crisis, changing demographics, and the rise of supermarket chains threatened its existence.
The event featured keynote speaker Ken Reardon, who shared his experiences working alongside Essex Market vendors during the 1980s, including never-before-seen documentary footage capturing the spirit of vendor activism that continues today.
Nina LoSchiavo, Chief Operating Officer of Lower East Side Partnership, provided insights into the market's recent history, including the successful 2019 transition of vendors from the historic 1940-era building to their new home across the street during the Essex Crossing era, highlighting how collaborative advocacy between vendors, community members, and city officials made this move possible.
