New Year, New Cans
New year, new cans!
You may have spotted these around the neighborhood already, as NYC Department of Sanitation began installing the new, modern Better Bins across our district.
Since fall of 2023, the new litter baskets have begun replacing the city’s old mesh baskets. The new modular design is one that keeps the trash away from the ground; meaning these baskets are easier for humans to use, harder for rats to abuse, and more efficient for Sanitation Workers to empty.
Soon, the old mesh baskets that allowed trash juice out and rats in will be a thing of the past. All baskets will be replaced citywide over the next several years.
A big thank you to DSNY for the shiny new litter baskets around the Lower East Side! Keeping our streets clean and vibrant is a team effort, and we’re so grateful for their work in supporting our community. Let’s all do our part to keep the LES looking its best—use those bins and stay tidy!
